ARTHRITIS – NATURAL PAIN RELIEF WITH MASSAGE AND BOWEN THERAPY

Many older people will tell you that it’s no fun getting old. As our body ages and slows down, it can often start to ache most of the time.

Most of my clients think that these aches and pains are normal signs of aging and that they should learn to live with them.

Arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions affect an estimated 7 million (29%) Australians and are large contributors to illness, pain and disability in Australia.

ARTHRITIS AND OTHER MUSCULOSKELETAL CONDITIONS

Back pain and problems are caused by numerous factors, including muscle strain or displacement of an intervertebral disc. These may result from an underlying illness or injury.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition affecting weight-bearing joints, such as the hips, knees and ankles as well as the hands and spine. In the initial stages, pain occurs in the joints during and after activity, but as the condition progresses pain may be experienced from minimal movement or during rest.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease causing chronic inflammation of the joints. It most commonly affects the hand joints and can lead to deformities of the hands.

Osteoporosis is a condition where there is a progressive loss of bone density and decrease in the strength of the skeleton with a resultant risk of fracture.

Juvenile arthritis refers to the types of arthritis occurring in children aged under 16. It may cause significant pain, disability and restrictions in school and other activities.

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that develops when an excess of uric acid in the blood leads to deposits of uric acid crystals in one or more joints, causing inflammation.

Arthritis can have a profound impact on a person’s quality of life and wellbeing due to acute and chronic pain, physical limitations, management of the condition and mental health issues. This can often result in withdrawal from the social, community and occupational activities.

Arthritic pain can be so bad it’s thought that up to 25% of all GP visits are concerned with arthritic conditions. GP’s often prescribe anti-inflammatories, rest, and “getting used to it” because it is a consequence of “getting older”. (This statement contributes to the thoughts of most of my clients.)

Besides the obvious toxic effects of prescription medication, many people experience digestive complaints as a result of the medication. How encouraging is that!

The truth is, arthritis and joint pain can be alleviated. Even if you have arthritis stemming from injury or infection to the joint, you can greatly reduce or eliminate the pain, without having to resort to pain medication. Arthritic joint pain does not have to be an accepted consequence of aging.

MASSAGE & BOWEN THERAPY

Massage and Bowen Technique are effective for all types of arthritis and can help alleviate the pain from the first treatment. When we feel pain in one area, our body will try to use it as little as possible and overuse other parts of the body to compensate for that. Of course, the firing patterns in these muscles are altered as they try and take the pain away from the arthritic joints causing a cascade of compensating events to take place and eventually there are more problem areas and injury becomes more widespread. Eventually, this can bring stress and tension to the whole body, so Massage and Bowen Therapy can be highly effective in breaking the cycle and reducing the pain by re-orientating the muscle, tendon and ligament fibres which can allow bring back the balance to the body.
